Sports HUB

About the Sports HUB

The Sports HUB brings together all of Wavu Africa’s sports programs in one place so visitors can easily see how sport is used as a tool for peace, education, and opportunity.
Youth from communities such as Kibera, Mathare, Kangemi, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Viwandani, and Kiandutu access structured leagues, coaching, and mentorship that keep them engaged and away from risky behaviors.

Value-Based Sports (VBS)

Wavu Africa trains community coaches in a Values-Based Sports methodology that uses sport to teach resilience, teamwork, respect, and healthy decision-making.
Through VBS sessions, coaches integrate life skills, health education, and referrals to services, helping players address challenges like school dropout, crime, drug use, and gender-based violence.

Our Sports Disciplines

Football

Football is the foundation of Wavu Africa’s sports work, with organized leagues, academies, and tournaments engaging youth from informal settlements across Nairobi and nearby counties.
Players build technical skills, discipline, and leadership through structured competitions and showcase events that connect them to opportunities and supportive role models.

Basketball

Basketball offers a dynamic space for young people to grow in confidence, teamwork, and creativity through community leagues, school partnerships, and holiday camps.
Programs focus on fundamental skills, character, and mentorship, with a special emphasis on opening doors for girls and mixed-gender teams to participate at different levels.

Pickleball

Pickleball is a fast-growing, accessible sport that Wavu Africa is introducing as a fun, low-barrier way for children and teens to get active and connect with peers.
Using small courts and simple equipment, pickleball sessions invite beginners of all backgrounds to play, learn basic rules, and experience the joy of sport together.

Where We Play

Sports programs run in and around informal settlements including Kibera, Mathare, Kangemi, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Viwandani, and Kiandutu, bringing structured activities directly into communities.
Local coaches, teachers, and community leaders partner with Wavu Africa to organize safe, well-run training sessions and tournaments that reflect the priorities of young people and their families.

Impact and Stories

Through the Sports HUB, thousands of youth report improved self-esteem, stronger friendships, and better engagement in school as they participate in regular practices and competitions.
