Sports & SDGs: Driving Sustainable Development

Sport is more than a game for us; it is a tool for sustainable development. Through grassroots football, basketball, and pickleball, Wavu Africa contributes to key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by improving health and well-being, keeping children in school, promoting gender equality, building peaceful communities, and creating safe, inclusive spaces for young people in Nairobi’s informal settlements.

SDG 3: Good Health & Well-being

Regular training and tournaments encourage physical activity, mental health, and positive lifestyles for children and youth.

SDG 4: Quality Education

Value-based sports sessions reinforce discipline, teamwork, and life skills that support school retention and learning among youth in Nairobi’s informal settlements.

SDG 5: Gender Equality

Mixed and girls’ teams create safe spaces for girls to play, lead, and challenge harmful gender norms in their communities.

SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities

By creating inclusive leagues where girls, boys and youth from different backgrounds train, compete and lead together in safe community spaces. Through mixed teams, fair-play rules and leadership opportunities for young people from Nairobi’s informal settlements, sport becomes a platform to challenge discrimination, amplify marginalized voices and expand access to positive life opportunities.

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities & Communities

Using local pitches and community centers for safe, organized sport helps make dense urban settlements more inclusive and resilient for all residents.

SDG 16: Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions

Fair-play leagues and community tournaments reduce violence, build trust, and offer alternatives to crime and drugs while fostering peaceful communities.
